This is a very important question. The fastest, least resource intensive, and most reliable method of creating backups is on a secondary hard drive. However, having backups created on a remote server can possibly be safer since if in the event that your server was hacked, the backups on the secondary hard drive may be compromised whereas they may be safer on the remote server. The remote backup process is usually more resource intensive though and less reliable. Either way, the backup utility is known to stop without notice at times, therefore it is absolutely necessary and extremely important that you check the backup files on a frequent and regular basis to make sure that the backups are up to date and have not stopped being created.
